Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontics and Braces

What is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who is skilled at moving and straightening teeth to create a better bite and improved teeth positioning. They have had 2 - 3 years of specialized training in Orthodontics.

What Do You Mean by Bite?

A bite is how your teeth fit together when you close. If a person has a good bite, it is more comfortable, and there is even better chance that they will keep their teeth throughout their life. A bad bite can cause many problems, including headaches.

What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Many things: teeth that are too close, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, losing your baby teeth too soon, mouth breathing, extra teeth, large teeth, missing teeth, teeth spaced apart, and small jaws. That's a lot, isn't it?

Will I Look Funny?

No way, man! A lot of people have braces, and many more have had braces at one time or another. Braces are just handles used to move your teeth in a positive manner. It is not uncommon to see half the kids in your school with them. BRACES ARE COOL!

Will it Hurt?

A little bit - at first, but that way you know it is working. The discomfort usually lasts about 48 to 72 hours, max. The discomfort should get less and less as you wear your braces.

Can I Still Do Extra-Curricular Activities?

Of course you can. In fact, we encourage you to keep doing the same things you did before. Don't let the braces stop you. Athletics and band can be a regular part of this as well. Just be careful.

How Long Will Treatment Take?

The doctor will tell you as you go, but normally it takes 1-1/2 to 3 years. It depends on how severe the problem is, your cooperation in treatment, and keeping all your appointments.

What Can I Do if the Wire is Sticking Me?

Find a blunt object, such as a spoon or pencil eraser, and bend the wire to the point that it isn't sticking you. You can also dry the wire as much as possible and put wax on it to relieve the "sticker".

What if a Ligature Breaks?

You don't need to do anything right away. The other ligatures are holding the wire in place, so there is no need to panic. Just call the office and ask when you can come in.

What About a Broken or Loose Band?

If you notice a band or bracket is loose, call the office to have it replaced. If either comes completely off, please bring it to your appointment.

What is the Wax for?

Wax is provided in case your braces stick you. You can apply wax to a bracket or band so that it will be smooth and will relieve the discomfort. The doctor or staff will show you how it is done.

What if I Have Space?

There is no need to worry about it. There is going to be space at times throughout the treatment due to the wire size changes the doctor will make.
